Joining a board is an enormous responsibility. Trying to navigate resources online can be difficult due to financial barriers or the expectation you already have some experience/ advanced knowledge. It was great to have a group to discuss matters around joining any board, especially with racial disparities in Canadian boardrooms. Thanks to this initiative, when several organizations reached out to me to join their board due to my expertise in strategic thinking, People and Culture, diversity equity and inclusion, and more, I was able to approach it with confidence.

The training provided in the BGLP has definitely improved my performance on the board that I currently sit on and increased my confidence to seek out other opportunities for board membership. Learning from Black community members who have extensive experience on boards, created an incredibly rich, energizing and soul nourishing experience. They were generous with their knowledge, approachable and kind. I looked forward to our weekend classes, even though they were eight hour days. The program was well organized, the content timely and answered a lot of questions that I had about board membership. It was also a great networking experience and I will definitely remain in contact with many of the members, as it provides future opportunities for learning, mentorship and collaboration.

Passion, commitment and the will to lead, the team of the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario already had, effective board governance and leadership practices is what the BLGP project added to our toolset. We had the opportunity and privilege to learn from some of the best minds on board governance and leadership, all while incorporating an Afrocentric lens to leadership. This program was beneficial to our organization and I would recommend that all black-led organization engage their team in this program.
